The Pink Panther
The character's popularity spawned a spin-off franchise of theatrical shorts , television cartoons and merchandise. He starred in short films, 4 TV series and four TV specials. The animated Pink Panther character's initial appearance in the live action film's title sequence, directed by Friz Freleng , was such a success with audiences and United Artists that the studio signed Freleng and his DePatie—Freleng Enterprises studio to a multi-year contract for a series of Pink Panther theatrical cartoon shorts. The trademark of The Phantom, a renowned jewel thief, is a glove left at the scene of the crime. Inspector Clouseau, an expert on The Phantom's exploits, feels sure that he knows where The Phantom will strike next and leaves Paris for Switzerland, where the famous Lugashi jewel 'The Pink Panther' is going to be. However, he does not know who The Phantom really is, or for that matter who anyone else really is This film is memorable for a number of reasons, primarily for being the first in a tremendously successful and funny series which would ultimately showcase one of the world's favorite cinematic policemen, the bumbling Jacques Clouseau Sellers. And can anyone remember a time before Henry Mancini's familiar theme existed? Being the first, of course, makes this the prototype, and though it's a good movie, it's obvious that the formula for success which the following films in the series employed had not yet been honed to perfection. Consequently, though funny, the hilarity level of this one is comparatively low, though it does have it's moments, the best of which involve Clouseau. From the day it premiered, it was readily apparent that what really made it a go was Sellers; and Edwards and his team have to be given credit for recognizing it immediately.
The Pink Panther is a British-American media franchise primarily focusing on a series of comedy-mystery films featuring an inept French police detective, Inspector Jacques Clouseau. The franchise began with the release of the classic Pink Panther film in The role of Clouseau was originated by, and is most closely associated with, Peter Sellers. Most of the films were written and directed by Blake Edwards , with theme music composed by Henry Mancini. Elements and characters inspired by the films were adapted into other media, including books, comic books and animated series. The first film in the series derives its name from the eponymous pink diamond that has an enormous size and value. The diamond is called the "Pink Panther" because the flaw at its centre, when viewed closely, is said to resemble a leaping pink panther. The phrase reappears in the title of the fourth film The Return of the Pink Panther , in which the theft of the diamond is again the centre of the plot. The phrase was used for all the subsequent films in the series, even when the jewel did not figure in the plot. The jewel ultimately appeared in six of the 11 films.
